Having gone through a terrible loss in 2009, I\u00a0was circling the same little existence over days, months, years. I\u00a0couldn\u2019t go back. And for the first time in my life, I had absolutely no idea where to\u00a0go next. Nothing moved me. My life was utterly stuck.<\/p>\n One January morning in the mirror, my voice inside said clearly, \u201cCarmell, when the\u00a0opportunity presents, you have to be ready to jump.\u201d I looked squarely into my eyes\u00a0 completely trusting, and said, \u201cOk.\u201d By the end of that day, I had rented out\u00a0my house for a year, had 2.5 months to clean out 20 years of life, and had NO plan or\u00a0even a clue of what to do next. On May 5th, in a series of inexplicable events, I found myself at 42-years old on a\u00a0plane, alone for the first time in 20 years, headed to Paris with only a backpack, no\u00a0French, knowing no one, and having an AirB&B for the first 2 days.<\/p>\n What has ensued in my life since that day, is nothing short of miraculous.\u00a0I discovered how travel forces you to let go of what you thought you knew.\u00a0 About\u00a0yourself. About others. About life. And about what is possible. Though it makes me laugh to say it, meditation in Bali is somehow easier.\u00a0 The seriousness with which we anchor our lives is mysteriously set free as we practice smiling meditation and laughing yoga.\u00a0 The stillness deeply awakens your mind and heart.\u00a0 In truth, you won\u2019t be able to stop smiling as you move through your days in the sweet peace of Bali.<\/p>\n The first day I arrived, I met my teacher though I didn\u2019t yet know it.\u00a0 I asked him to help me see Bali and he told me, \u201cTri Hita Karana.\u201d\u00a0 Harmony with the people.\u00a0 Harmony with the mother\u2014the earth.\u00a0 Harmony with the God.<\/p>\n Though I heard his words, it took me two months of being here to begin to understand a lifetime of practice in the Balinese heart.<\/p>\n Bali is balance\u2014but balance like a dancer, not a scale– in constant movement from the center instead of weighing one thing against another. the sun and sea in the tiny village of Amed<\/strong> extending lazily along the upper Eastern coastline.<\/p>\n I discovered our first little paradise from my scooter as I headed north on the tiny roads out of Ubud.\u00a0 I took a tiny side road and passed fresh laundry washed in the stream and spread on the clean grasses along the side of the road.\u00a0 A little further, I saw a driveway ascending steeply out of sight into rice fields.\u00a0 The sign said Villa JJ and Spa<\/strong>, and as I passed it, I stopped, backed up, and gunned my little Scooby up the steep drive.\u00a0 Ahead of me lay the Villa JJ and Spa, a gorgeous oasis of gardens and elegant bungalows lovingly nestled amidst silvery green rice fields along the edge of the ever-present Balinese jungle.<\/p>\n The bungalows are tucked away amidst three artful infinity pools with fountains and stone mosaics pathways.\u00a0 In your room, you will discover your spacious sanctuary within our oasis, with tropical hardwoods, luxurious beds draped in white sheers, high thatched ceilings, gardens in the bathrooms, and open-air showers under the jungle canopy.<\/p>\n \u00a0<\/p>\n \u00a0<\/p>\n I would gather them each day to make my own simple offering to the God.\u00a0 In my room, I had laid out my saffron pashmina I found in McLeodganj India<\/strong>, my traveling Ganesha<\/strong> (god of prosperity and remover of obstacles), my rose quartz angel of Traveler\u2019s Safety<\/strong> (a gift from a heart-sister), a Balinese offering coin, and the white coral letters \u00a0L-O-V-E<\/strong>, I discovered in Amed itself.<\/p>\n Imagine my surprise to come back to my room one day and discover a small vase of fresh frangipani on my altar.\u00a0 The next day, more flowers magically appeared and my Ganesha was now nestled into and surrounded by pink and white frangipani blossoms.<\/p>\n Each day some new little offering was added to my temple by Wayan Sueni and Wayan Sana<\/strong>\u2014my angels in Amed.\u00a0 One of the greatest gifts of the Barong and Amed has been the seven beautiful souls who have helped me, smiled into my eyes, welcomed me, shared Christmas with me, been delighted by my bumbling attempts to speak Bahasa, and solemly bade me hati hati\u2014be careful, Carmell<\/strong>.<\/p>\n And\u2026 made offering at my little temple for me.<\/p>\n I want you to meet my Balinese family yourself and find offerings lovingly added to your own temple whether of saffron pashmina and flowers or simply of your heart.<\/p>\n furnishings and surrounded by exotic bird-of-paradise, colorful freesia and frangipani trees.<\/p>\n Halfway through our week, we will be taxied from the high rice fields and jungle to the quiet village of Amed and the beaches along the Java Sea<\/strong>.\u00a0 Here you will find yourself worshiping the Balinese sun from an infinity pool that looks like it drops right off into the ocean.\u00a0 The Barong<\/strong> boutique bungalows will capture you with their white on white rooms, ultra comfortable beds, and lush tropical gardens.<\/p>\n One of my private joys of Amed and the Barong was walking down the garden paths strewn with fresh frangipani of yellow, pink, white, and orange blown softly from the branches by the ocean breezes each morning and evening.
