1997: Being \u201cdownsized\u201d corrected the course of my life<\/h2>\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t

I\u2019d moved from project management into team management in the software company I\u2019d been at for 7 years. I was \u201con the career path\u201d and proud of the recognition I\u2019d received.<\/p>

Seven months later my position was inexplicably downsized. My boss sat in my office. \u00a0\u201cYou can take voluntary layoff with a 3 weeks severance package, or you can take a position in shipping. \u00a0You\u2019ll still make the same salary (a management salary, mind you), you\u2019ll just be working in shipping under that manager.\u201d<\/p>

Still in my late twenties, I can recall the shock and fear. \u00a0\u201cI\u2019ll never be able to get another job as good as this one, making the money I do.\u201d \u00a0\u201cNo one will hire me!\u201d \u00a0My brain said, \u201cYou\u2019re taking the shipping position.\u201d \u00a0But even as this thought went through my mind, the deepest calm and peace I\u2019ve ever felt started at my head and went through my entire body. \u00a0A little voice inside me said, \u201cYou\u2019re taking the layoff.\u201d \u00a0My head yelled NO! \u00a0Yet my whole body was calmly clear that I would leave and I knew it.<\/p>

Though I couldn\u2019t know it then, this marked the beginning of full-time entrepreneurship and the redirection to the work I do today. \u00a0Something inside me knew this was THE moment of a massive course correction in my life\u2014and was making absolutely sure I took it.<\/p>
